Craft Saturday – Winter 2011

Flyer for this years winter Craft Saturday. I am excited by the colors and how it came together.

Wacom Recognize Wacom

I got a message from old friend and collaborator John Vanderslice to do a quick piece of collateral tour artwork for his website.  Its been too long since he and I have had a chance to work together so I jumped at the chance.  It felt great to try on the design language he and I had honed over so many Albums, Posters and T-Shirts.  I have a much better workflow on doing hand rendered text thanks to my Wacom Cintiq now so turn around was only a few hours of work.

Inspired by a friends move to a new job this was my take on the companies name. need to reconsider the feet/legs but really like the top half so far.

Drinking Red Stuff

Here is the new Craft Saturday flyer.  Iowa friends this is a great time to plan to see me!

Also notable in that it was the fastest made flyer yet probably. And I really like how it turned out! It’s inspired by my Grandmothers old backyard.

while it is true that my glasses are really not this big it is how they feel on my face!

If I Ever Want to Drive Myself Insane

Work in progress for longtime collaborator Aidan Hawken.  Zoom in for better idea on the textures.

Marwencol

Last night I was finally able to see Marwencol. The documentary about Mark Hogancamp, an artist recovering from a traumatic brain injury by building a world for him and his friends. The world is 1/6th scale and set in the fictional WW2 city of Marwencol. Marwencol is a sanctuary for soldiers of all sides so long as you behave, here Mark runs a bar and falls in love with Anna, the most beautiful doll he has.  Mark takes amazing photos of this world and creates a compelling narrative that facilitates his need to be creative and as the movie points out, becomes his therapeutic output for the traumatic attack that put him into a coma and destroyed much of his memory.

I was particularly inspired by Mark’s photography skill. Seemingly with no training he was able to do amazing shots. I paid particular attention to the details he constantly considered. Tilting a characters head just right, the pains he went to to make sure items were distressed enough to look right in the scene.

I have been waiting to see this movie for a long time now. I have had the Marwencol book but I knew going in that was only a part of the story. The work is great enough to stand on its own, but knowing the amazing details on who Mark is and where these characters come from and what it means to him make the images even more real. Try to find Marwencol in the theater if you get a chance. marwencol.com for more information

Harper

Harper is our new dog. He is a 2 and a half year old boxer from Kentucky. We got him through the Minnesota Boxer Rescue. He is pretty awesome and we all get along great. He is super cute too. As evidenced by the attached photo.

It’s Not Much

Hello friends!

New house new art new season. Huge new yard to mow. New address! (email me if you need it plz) Continued efforts for my friends the Mountain Goats below are the shirts for the recent european tour and the upcoming US tour.

Buddha Machine

Today is my first day with my new Buddha Machine. It’s basically a loop station that has 18 different kinda ambient loops that drone endlessly through either the single speaker or headphones. Incredibly awesome to have if you want to relax at work. It has this very precious distortion and static that really gets to me. There is an iphone app version for those that can’t commit to the little plastic box.

Finished my shirt work for The Mountain Goats with this final design. This will be the US tour shirt. Additionally the viking image from before has been remixed into a track coat that will be available in the US as well. Very excited to see these done and to get a reaction from both fans of  The Mountain Goats and people that know my work from before. These were deliberately comic book like and sketchy as this style really appealed to The Mountain Goats team. It has grown on me too. Hopefully I get some more time in this style soon. Gotta think of things to draw!
